Description
Richard puts together the three Boxes of Orden, while Kahlan confesses him. However, the Mord-Sith and Rahl find them in the middle of the confession, and Zedd is killed by his own deflected wizard's fire. Cara uses her Agiel on Richard, and the resulting combination of magics of Orden, Confessor, and Agiel results in a magical explosion that sends Richard and Cara fifty-eight years into the future. Rahl takes Richard's disappearance for victory, and captures Kahlan. Kahlan is thrown into a dungeon for refusing to marry Rahl, and finds that Shota has been imprisoned there as well. Shota has had a vision of Richard's reappearance fifty-eight years in the future, and tells Kahlan that Richard will need to recombine Orden, confession, and Agiel at the right place and time in order to return to the present. Kahlan decides to marry Rahl so that she can have a Confessor child who will live long enough to confess Richard. As queen, Kahlan entrusts her secret about Richard to a servant named Alice, telling her stay alive long enough to tell Richard what he needs to do to return to his time; eventually, Alice is killed by Darken Rahl. Kahlan, instead of conceiving a girl, gives birth to a male Confessor, Nicholas, who grows up to murder both his parents and become a merciless tyrant. In the future, Richard joins forces with Cara to destroy Nicholas after Cara discovers that Nicholas killed off all the Mord-Sith. They meet up with the Shota (fifty-eight years older), who tells Richard about the magical combination required to travel back in time. They trick Nicholas into confessing Richard while he unites the boxes and is tortured by Cara's Agiel, sending Richard and Cara back to time and place of Kahlan's original confession. Cara, seeking to avert a future where the Mord-Sith are obliterated, stops torturing Richard just before they are sent into the future again and saves Zedd. Rahl destroys the Boxes with the Sword of Truth, but is killed in the resulting explosion.
