Written by Isaac Asimov
A short story in the Robot Stories Of Isaac Asimov series

Cover Notes

A Mike Donovan and Greg Powell story.

Powell and Donovan are now in charge of field tests of an asteroid mining robot, and for some reason if they don't watch the robot it comes back empty. The robot has subsidiary robots under its control, and when they secretly observe the robot it starts going on absurd marches and dances with its subsidiaries whenever something unexpected happens.

Here, Asimov anthropomorphises by having a robot "twiddle its thumbs" when it can't think of what to do.
