Series created by Frank Herbert and extended by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson
Description
Like Future History sequence of stories originally written by Isaac Asimov and added to by others, the Dune sequence is a far-reaching series of stories spread over many years and cast out amonst the stars. The series originally focused on the desert planet Arrakis (aka Dune or Rakis), which was the sole source for a drug known as Melange. The drug prolongs life, enables space travel and even prophetic powers.
Originally written by Frank Herbert, the original sequence was completed bt his son Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson from notes and manuscript left behind. They have since extended the scope of the sequence with two other series and the promise of a third one on the way.
The Dune sequence:
Prelude To Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson
As Emperor Elrood's son Shaddam plots a subtle regicide, young Leto Atreides leaves his lush, water-rich planet for a year's education on the mechanized world of Ix; a planetologist named Pardot Kynes is dispatched by the Emperor to the desert planet Arrakis, or Dune, to discover the secrets of the addictive spice known as melange; and the eight-year-old slave Duncan Idaho is hunted by his cruel masters in a terrifying game from which he vows escape and vengeance. But none can envision the fate in store for them: one that will make them renegades-and shapers of history.
Legends Of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson
The LEGENDS OF DUNE trilogy details the saga of the century-long conflict, as well as the original breach that formed the deadly feud between House Atreides and House Harkonnen. The story includes Tio Holtzman's development of foldspace and shield technology, the establishment of the Imperium by House Corrino, and the Zensunni Wanderers' escape from slavery and their flight to the desert world of Arrakis. Readers will also see the seeds of DUNE's famous Great Schools of the Mentats, the Bene Gesserit, the Suk Doctors, and the Swordmasters.
Heroes Of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson
The first book in this sequence, Paul Of Dune, is in effect a direct sequel to Dune, filling in much of the story of Paul's Jihad, and will be published this September. Jessica also fits mostly into this time period. Irulan is a sequel to Dune Messiah, taking place after blind Paul has walked off into the sand, leaving his empire in the hands of Alia. And Leto Of Dune takes place immediately after the end of Children Of Dune, showcasing the first years of the God Emperor's reign.
