Welcome to The Classic Fantasy & Science Fiction Database

Welcome to Classic-SF website. My aim is for a 'first stop' site for all general queries regarding fantasy and science fiction stories together with links to other sites for 'in-depth' information. If you have any useful comments or suggestions please forward them to me via the Contact Me form.

Images on pages

From today, I am starting the use of a cookbook menu from Petko Yotov, which allows you to produce a gallery of 'clickable images'. I'm using this at the moment on the Series pages (see http://classic-sf.com/Series/StarshipTroupers) and Titles pages (see http://classic-sf.com/Titles/ACompanyOfStars) to display the cover images - click on them to view the image at a larger scale. Later I will do the same for the Headshots.

New Forum

I have replaced the foum on this site. As well as the ContactMe form there is now the forum to post questions and answers. I shall also use it to make announcements.

A third board is available for general discussion. These may be altered or developed as time goes on.

At all times CLEAN and NO SPAN!

Please Help Classic-SF:

If you have a little money to spare and you could donate a small amount to keep the site open, then please click the button at the top right.

If you would like to help, either by editing, providing / correcting information then either Contact Me with information or to request a log-in.

If you are a writer and you are or are not included or you would like to add / correct any information or indeed if there is any content or lack of content to which you object, then again please Contact Me with details and I'll try to make the changes as soon as I can.!!!Plea for Help

A visitor to the site has asked me for help in identifying a story from a few years ago. I've moved this to the Help Request? forum so if anyone can help they can post the comments directly.

Algis Budrys

Sadly someone else whose work I admired has become lost to us. Algirdas Jonas Budrys (Algis Budrys) passed away on the 9th. June. He was a remarkable Prussian-born writer. He wasn't published well in the UK, but I think he was well-known for one title - Who?.

Robert Asprin

Sadly, classic-sf notes the passing of a top fantasy writer, Robert Asprin, who died quietly in his sleep at the age of 61.

Changes to Site

  • Universal Edit Button is now enabled for this site. If Firefox is your browser, then you will see a green pencil to the right of the address bar denoting an editable page. see http://universaleditbutton.org/Universal_Edit_Button.
  • If you click on the cover images on the book pages using the latest version template, a page will open showing the cover image much larger for easier viewing.

On The Move Again!

Following nearly a month of cataclysmic server problems, I reluctantly decided to move again. This time I found a more local hosting company in the UK and so far I feel very happy about it. There was a problem with a criminal element clearing the servers last weekend, but that can happen at any hosting company.

The size is right, the price is right and the speed is good, with a good response from the company in the case of a query.

If anyone is interested the company in question is http://bionic-hosting.co.uk.

Layout

Following trials with my mobile phone (Nokia 73 with service provider Three), I have decided to experiment with re-skinning the site. All facilities will be retained, but with a slightly cleaner display which will provide a better display on a smaller screen.

The menu bar which was previously to the left will appear at the bottom, reached using the 'Menu' button at the top of each page.

If you have any comments, Contact Me as always.

Collection / Anthology

After a bit of head-scratching I've decieded to use the following definitions:

  • Anthology - a collection of stories by more than one author, usually edited by yet another.
  • Collection - a collection of stories by one author.

Apologies:

I've moved the site to a new server and uploaded the site from a back-up copy. What I didn't realise was that the back-up copy was out of date and I've got a lot of typing to do. So bear with me and I'll catch up as soon as I can. In the mean time, I'll be subtly altering the pages to take in other functions available in the Pm Wiki cookbook including Categories? which will be displayed along the bottom of each page.

New:

With the latest version of the site (PmWiki version 2), I'm trying to extend the scope to include guides to people and places in some of the more noticeable stories and dictionary of some of the more obscure (well to me) terms - for example see dos-ą-dos. They are all listed under the banner page of Encyclopaedia - see left. I hope that everything added by me and any other editors is from the public domain. If you have any comments or additions or personal or copyright problems, then Contact me.
