Animated plastic dummies threaten London. Shop assistant Rose is attacked and saved by a stranger calling himself the Doctor. Rose and her boyfriend Mickey try to investigae 'the Doctor' through a conspiracy theorist's website. A bin comes to life and absorbs Micdkey replacing him with a plasticed duplicate which later starts to interrogate Rose about the Doctor's activities.
The Doctor explains that Mickey and the manequins are controlled by the Nestene Consciousness, which is attempting to take over Earth using it's plastic warriors - the Autons - and a transmitter which Rose concludes is in the London Eye. The Docor, who has a vial of 'anti-plastice' attempts to reason with the Nestene Consciousness, but fails and the Autons are all activated through a signal sent through the London Eye. Londoners are attacked and this is only stopped by Rose dropping the vial of 'anti-plastic' into the Nestene Consciousness with a couple of the Autons, thus stopping the signal and thus saving London and the Doctor.
The Doctor invites Rose to join him on his travells and she accepts leaving her boyfriend behind.
